It looks like a new Slayer is being called by the fates to battle the monsters that go bump in the night.

It was revealed at San Diego Comic Con this week that Fox 21 TV Studios has a reboot of the supernatural teenage drama, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, that hit TV screens 21 years ago under development. The series has tapped Midnight, Texas creator, Monica Owusu-Breen, to act as writer, executive producer, and showrunner with Joss Whedon (the OG showrunner of the series) acting as executive producer.

The reboot will be pitched this summer to streaming and cable networks. The series producers shared their hopes and goals for the show at SDCC, “Like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today.”

Rumor has it that the series is looking to cast an African American Slayer for the reboot – which is really the only exciting part of this news and if the series does get picked up (which it will), I truly hope this is a casting choice we do see! But according to Deadline, sources all reveal that the series is still very much in early stages of development so many details including casting and how much the reboot will mirror the original series are still being figured out.

This news comes after a year of rumors about a possible reboot started circulating around post the Entertainment Weekly reunion issue in celebrating 20 years of Buffy! It only seemed like a matter of time until we got a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot since that is what is happening now with “retro” titles. Though maybe the Buffy reboot will go more on the lines of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina which is twisting the story, unlike The Charmed reboot which literally looks like just a copy paste version of the original.

I think with most reboots, especially one regarding one of the most beloved TV series of ALL TIME (sure that maybe just my opinion), we should all be asking why? Why do we need to do this? Why is Hollywood turning away from new original ideas and just looking to recreate not innovate? Is this really needed?

For right now, we can only hope.

So are you excited about a possible Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot?
