Well it looks like the world won’t be dark and full of terrors after the final episode of Game of Thrones in 2019!
HBO announced this Friday that they have officially ordered a pilot for one of five Game of Thrones spin-offs they had in development. The premium cable network has greenlit a prequel from writer Jane Goldman (Stardust, X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass) who will also act as the showrunner for the series.
Let’s take a moment to kind of freak out that we are getting a female showrunner for a Game of Thrones series!
Any who…now to the plot of the series:
Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.
What is the golden Age of Heroes you may ask? According to the history of Westeros the Age of Heroes took place approximately 10,000 years ago and lasted about four millennia. The major events that happened during the Age of Heroes are the Long Night and the first war with the White Walkers! Though I think it is safe to say we will not be seeing any of our current favorite Game of Thrones characters we could see the beginnings of the House Stark and House Lannister with the possible appearance of Bran the Builder and Lann the Clever. Sure there may not be Jon Snow but we could see the Night King and the OG Three-Eyed Raven in this series.
Goldman (who is also currently penning the live-action The Little Mermaid for Disney) will be credited as co-creator on the un-titled series with George R.R. Martin. As perviously reported Game of Thrones showrunners, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, will be be involved with any of the spin-off series. Once the two finish the final series of Game of Thrones they will make their way over to the Lucasfilm offices to work on their new series of Star Wars films.
A couple months ago HBO announced that none of the possible spin-offs would air before the final season of Game of Thrones which is due out in 2019 so it looks like the earliest we could see this prequel series is 2020!
HBO has no word on the other four Game of Thrones spin-off series in development but according to sources the other series are still “under consideration.”
I do find it interesting and a wee but concerning (cause you know Jon Snow and stuff) that the spin-off that has been greenlit features the possibility of more White Walkers since they will be playing seemingly a HUGE role in the final season of Game of Thrones as well as Bran the Builder since there are fan theories out there thinking that Bran Stark could be Bran the Builder. Are we going back to the beginning? Will this prequel really have more in common with Game of Thrones then we are being lead to believe? How will I sleep at night?!?!?
Who else is super excited! Also HBO I am STILL very much available to act as a consulting producer. 😉
