Say what?! Idris Elba is going to star in, direct, and produce The Hunchback of Notre Dame. And when I say star, I mean he will be portraying Quasimodo, the disfigured and mysterious figure that resides in the highest recesses of the church.
This won’t be a reimagining of the animated Disney movie that featured a charming little love story, catchy songs, and an adorable little goat. Elba will be doing a modern retelling of the Victor Hugo Gothic romance novel from 1831 for Netflix.
The Hollywood Reporter describes the film as being a “sonic and musical experience.” Oh, and Elba will also be producing the music because he can do everything. Michael Mitnick (The Giver) will write the script and Fred Berger (La La Land) and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Midnight Special) will be co-producing.
I’m with you, it’s hard to see Elba as Quasimodo but I think Strong Black Lead said it best:

The film is currently untitled but I’m strongly suggesting “Hunchback of Notre DAAAAAMN” pic.twitter.com/8KZ4YBfU8Z
