Ava DuVernay Joins the DC Universe as Director of “New Gods”

Way to let her go Disney, Lucasfilm, and Marvel…

We already knew Ava DuVernay is a superhero but now DC has made it official. It was announced this week that DuVernay is slated to direct New Gods, a new title part of Warner Bros. ever expanding DC Universe. New Gods was first published in 1971, this is how Variety breaks down the series

The New Gods are natives of the twin planets of New Genesis and Apokolips. New Genesis is an idyllic planet ruled by the Highfather, while Apokolips is a dystopia filled with machinery and fire pits ruled by the tyrant Darkseid. New Genesis and Apokolips call themselves gods, living outside of normal time and space in a realm known as the Fourth World.

The announcement of DuVernay as the director of New Gods comes after the release of DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time this past weekend. The Disney film made 42.2 million dollars in the first six days of the film’s release in North America. With the release of A Wrinkle in Time, DuVernay became the first women of color to direct a live-action film with a budget of 100 million dollars.

DuVernay is joining fellow kick-ass director, Patty Jenkins, at DC. DC’s next film, Aquaman, will be released this December and Wonder Woman 2 is slated for a November 2019 release.

While I am THRILLED that DuVernay is taking on superheroes, I am really pissed that Marvel and Lucasfilm let DuVernay go! I mean she just made a super successful film, Disney! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!? COME ON!
