Autonomous vehicles aren’t just about getting a little man in a tie from his bed to his desk job. It’s about making life easier for people and hopefully finding a way to look stylish in the process. It doesn’t get more stylish than this mean mug of a tractor called the Autonomous Concept Vehicle.
Despite the generic name, it’s a concept derived by agricultural equipment manufacturer Case IH, a unity of CNH Industrial. This insanely intimidating piece of automated machinery was unveiled at the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa. There is no cabin for the drive, so it is completely remote-controlled. It utilizes cameras, radar, and GPS in order for it to do its job. The futuristic farmer can monitor the machine’s progress on an app.
The machine operates day and night, saving time for the farmer so they can get their feet wet on farmersonly.com. It’s designed to plant seeds and harvest crops, among other tasks. Farmers can manage their fields and oversee operations of multiple vehicles at once. Path planning technology developed by Case IH allows the vehicle to prevent disruptions with obstacle detection.
We don’t yet know the price of this beautiful 31-mph 419-horsepower productive powerhouse of a machine but we do know that seeing it do everything it needs to do without human intervention is going to be an absolutely riot to watch. The machine is designed to be able to work in tandem with manned machinery though I’m not sure in which way, considering I’m not a farm.
Bloomberg has reported that there are some legal hurdles before it can go on sale such as where it can be parked and concerns about it potentially crossing roads while humans are around. Despite that, I absolutely cannot wait to see this thing out there in the world. If this thing becomes sentient and destroys us all then I’ll at least be thrilled that it was done by a badass looking machine.
